PTFE or Polythetra Fluor Ethylene is often used as a substitute. This fluoroplastic family offers high chemical resistance, low and high temperature capabilities, resistance to weathering, low friction, electrical and thermal insulation.
PTFE is inferior to other plastics, but its properties remain at useful levels over a wide temperature range from -100 ° F to 400 ° F (-73 ° C to 204 ° C). Mechanical properties are often improved by adding fillers. This PTFE has good thermal and electrical insulation properties and a low coefficient of friction.
PTFE is very dense and non-melt processed it must be compressed and sintered to form useful shapes. The mechanical properties of PTFE can be improved by adding fillers such as glass fiber, carbon, graphite, and bronze. Generally, this PTFE filled maintains excellent chemical and high temperature characteristics, while the filler improves mechanical strength, stability and wear resistance. The properties of 25% filled glass and 25% PTFE carbon filled grades are shown below for comparison purposes.
